Good question. Experience has been that people generally riff off a livery run on 'a' car from the same manufacturer but not necessarily the same model. I'll let Hat give you the definitive reply.
retro livery can be whatever retro inspiration you want. Yes generally people make a livery based on the same manufacturer but it doesn't have to be.
The S17 BHR Retro Livery is based on quite an oddball. Waterloo Motors ran a Lease Plan sponsored BMW E30 M3 in the 1993 Belgian Procar Championship, with Belgian locals Jean-Michael Martin and Eric Van de Poele driving the #6 and #13 cars respectively. Martin managed a best race result of 2nd in the season opener at Zolder, but would have a rather uneventful season. Van de Poele finished the season 6th in Class B. I based my livery on Martin's #6 car.
My inspiration is Bob Morris's ATCC winning 1979 A9X Torana, Beating Peter Brock's HDT for that year.. I know it's not related to BMW but got inspiration from it's a privateer run team, it has two doors & has similar shape to the M3..Apologies for not uploading retro livery on forum as I have no idea what I'm doing .. I have posted livery to my activity page on GTS..
