The Curse of van de Velde
    Mar 10 - 16
    Course: Carnoustie
    Par: 71
    Rounds: 4
Difficulty: 6/10: The course itself isn’t too difficult on paper, being a links course, many of the holes are quite similar, but being a British Open course, the conditions are what makes it so challenging. You’ll have to deal with high swirling winds, slick greens, severe fairway bumps, and rain in order to shoot low. It’s definitely worth putting a hybrid in the bag.
    Predicted Winning Score: -25

In the 1999 Open Championship, Frenchman Jean van de Velde walked onto the 18th tee with a 3 shot lead in the final round. He only needed a double bogey 6 to become France’s first major winner in 92 years. Unfortunately, he sliced a driver right, smacked his second into a grandstand, and then dribbled his third into Barry Burn. His mind had melted. He even contemplated playing his next shot out of the burn, but he elected to take a penalty. Still, an up and down would give him the title. Sadly, he’d find the bunker, and would card a triple bogey. Paul Lawrie, who started the day 10 shots behind van de Velde, defeated Jean and Justin Leonard in the playoff to record the largest comeback in major history. But almost no one remembers the ‘99 British Open for that. Van de Velde’s collapse is often regarded as the greatest choke in golf history, and rightly so. The full collapse is shown below, 14 minutes of the most painful sport you'll ever see, called to absolute perfection by the late, great Peter Alliss.

    Carnoustie Front 9

    Hole 1: Par 4, 373m, HCP 10
The opening hole is the first of 5 consecutive Par 4’s. An uphill Par 4, the pin is blind to the player on the second shot due to the hill and bunkers. The green slopes from front to back, so make sure you land your approach short of the pin. [IMG]

    Hole 2: Par 4, 420m, HCP 4
2 is a longer Par 4 with a wide fairway and various pot bunkers. The green is very deep, you could have anything from a wedge to a long iron in your hands for the second. The green slops sharply from left to right, and the Sunday pin placement in particular is treacherous. [IMG]

    Hole 3: Par 4, 323m, HCP 18
Hole 3 is an exciting hole, with a wide fair way and a few scattered bunkers. The burn at the front stops players from going for a Hail Mary tee shot. It’s best to lay up just short of the burn and pitch onto this huge green for an easy 2 putt par. [IMG]

    Hole 4: Par 4, 382m, HCP 12
This slight dogleg right Par 4 demands accuracy from the tee. Several mounds in the fairway can easily spit your ball into the rough so aim for the middle of the fairway. The green is a double, as it shares the same surface as the 14th hole. Pin locations can be tough, so make sure you stick your approach nice and close. [IMG]

    Hole 5: Par 4, 362m, HCP 4
The best spot to put your tee shot is just short of the burn. You’ll have an easy approach shot to a green that is massive, slopes hard to the front and is protected by a very deep bunker. It may seem like an easy hole at first glance, but it is also easy to rack up strokes quicker than you can say double bogey.

    Hole 6: Par 5, 531m, HCP 16
#6 is a long Par 5 that’ll only be reached in two by the longest hitters. Bomb a drive off the tee and aim for the left side of the fairway. A large mound and 3 bunkers make hitting this green in two tricky, as does a deep bunker behind. This is another long and deep green, so make sure you check your yardages before you attack the pin. [IMG]

    Hole 7: Par 4, 391m, HCP 14
This Par 4 is one of the more easy holes on the course. Keep your tee shot left to take the bunkers out of play. Don’t go over the back of the green or else you’ll have a tough up and down to save Par. The green slopes off in all directions. [IMG]

    Hole 8: Par 3, 174m, HCP 2
This Par 3 has something akin to an amphitheatre like atmosphere. The green is small by Carnoustie standards, and is two tiered. 4 bunkers protect this green but the biggest hazard of all is left of the road, local rules dictate that it is OB, so avoid it at all costs, unless of course you want to hit 3 off the tee.

    Hole 9: Par 4, 445m, HCP 8
Hole 9 is a long, narrow Par 4 with danger off the tee. Missing the fairway isn’t ideal at all, your second shot will be made difficult as a result. The fairway is very undulating, so check your lie angle. The green slopes off to the right, and anything right of centre will roll off the green. [IMG]

    Carnoustie Back 9

    Hole 10: Par 4, 441m, HCP 11
The inward nine begins with a dogleg left Par 4. You’ll need to carry the burn on your second shot in order to reach this deep green. It’s one of the easier greens on the course, so birdies are a real possibility, as long as you don’t roll the ball down the back right. [IMG]

    Hole 11: Par 4, 395m, HCP 15
This is a dogleg right Par 4 with severe undulations all the way down the fairway. 4 bunkers protect the green that features 4 distinct tiers. Rolling the ball up to the flag could yield amazing results or dire consequences. [IMG]

    Hole 12: Par 4, 449m, HCP 13
#12 is another long Par 4, whose fairway slopes off to the left. You’ll need a long iron into this very shallow green. Pins on the left are far easier than the right side, as it is far less undulating. [IMG]

    Hole 13: Par 3, 150m, HCP 9
This tricky Par 3 is a great hole for accurate players. If you hold the green, you’ll have a relatively flat putt that’ll be easy to lag. If not, you’ll struggle to get up and down for par. 4 deep bunkers protect this green which is perched up, so anything that misses will roll down into the rough. [IMG]

    Hole 14: Par 5, 472m, HCP 17
The last Par 5 on the course, bomb the tee shot to setup a possible green in two. The flag is blind from the fairway, and shares the green with the 4th. Avoid the bunkers and the small valley front left of the green. Eagles are possible but it’s easy to 3 putt or worse on this green, especially if you go too far and end up near the 4th pin! [IMG]

    Hole 15: Par 4, 480m, HCP 1
This is a very long Par 4 that plays like a Par 5 if the wind is in your face. You’ll probably need a long iron or fairway wood to reach the green, and even then you’ll most likely have a very long putt. Par is a good score here. [IMG]

    Hole 16: Par 3, 230m, HCP 3
The 16th at Carnoustie is often coined as the hardest Par 3 in the world. This is a dramatic long tee shot with an extremely narrow green. Avoid the bunkers at all costs. All flags at the front are notorious for their difficulty. Bogeys are common here, birdies are as rare as hens teeth. [IMG]

    Hole 17: Par 4, 426m, HCP 5
This hole is made much easier if you can carry the burn off the tee. The green is enormous, and slopes uncannily to the left. Be that as it may this is a birdie chance if your approach is on the money. But make sure your putt has just the right amount of power or you’ll be left with a broken heart. [IMG]

    Hole 18: Par 4, 482m, HCP 7
Ok we’re headed for home on another very long Par 4. This is where Jean van de Velde absolutely blew it in ‘99. Don’t do it here, just aim left off the tee and you’ll only have to carry the burn and avoid the bunkers to reach the green. [IMG]

Quite unbelievable, it’s a tie at -39 and we both had a low score of 58!
@Beats143, would you like to share the win or have a playoff?

    Championnat de France
    Mar 17 - 22
    Course: GC Champs Lumineux
    Par: 72
    Rounds: 4
Difficulty: 6/10: This course features some of the best risk reward holes you’ll ever play. Holes that punish the poor shot, reward the great shot, and some holes that are just a blast to play. The greens are hard and slick as oil, so your putting had better be on point.
    Predicted Winning Score: -28

As we discovered last week, the French haven’t exactly enjoyed the most impressive history in the game of golf. But that doesn’t stop the Frogs from producing some great courses, and this fantasy design might be the best of the lot. Perched on top of mountain, the views of the Alps are breathtaking, along with the village that accompanies the Back 9. Quite possibly the prettiest course in the game, just make sure you remain focused your game, as difficult as it might appear to be!

    GC Champs Lumineux Front 9

    Hole 1: Par 4, 436m, HCP 9
The opening hole is a downhill Par 4 with trouble on both sides of the fairway. You’ll be down in the dunes on the left or in the bunkers on the right if your tee shot isn’t struck pure. 2 deep bunkers protect this green that slopes off to the left. [IMG]

    Hole 2: Par 4, 316m, HCP 15
This short Par 4 shouldn’t be too much a of a challenge for most players. Drive your ball just short of the bunker guarding the green to leave an easy up and down. Don’t get too distracted by the gorgeous views of the mountains and village, this is a hole you’ll want to birdie every time. [IMG]

    Hole 3: Par 5, 562m, HCP 13
The 3rd is a long Par 5 that offers a number of alternatives. You’ll probably need the wind behind you to reach this green in two, but most players will opt for the safer option. The left fairway leaves a shorter approach to the green, but is slightly uphill. This green is treacherous, it’s very shallow and with 3 tiers, putting can be a real nightmare. [IMG]

    Hole 4: Par 3, 174m, HCP 7
This picturesque Par 3 is a real beauty. But with any kind of wind, it’s also a real beast. Check your elevation before teeing off, you don’t want to end up in any of the deep bunkers, or else saving par becomes something to celebrate! [IMG]

    Hole 5: Par 4, 427m, HCP 11
Check the pin position before you tee off on this medium length Par 4. If the pin is at the front, aim for the right of the generous landing area. If it’s at the back, then the left side offers the best angle. Watch out for the stream that runs alongside the left side of the fairway. Avoid the bunkers protecting this green and go for the long birdie putt. [IMG]

    Hole 6: Par 4, 302m, HCP 17
This short Par 4 offers a slim chance of making the green off the tee, but it requires supreme gall and accuracy. The green, which is perched up above the 2 large fairway bunkers is shaped like a crest, you make sure you land your approach, high and soft. This is an easy hole if you find the fairway, but a real nightmare if you miss. [IMG]

    Hole 7: Par 4, 468m, HCP 5
#7 is straight out of pure imagination. Avoid the pond to the left, but don’t go too far right or you’ll be down the mountain! The approach is long and uphill, you’ll do well to carry the large bunker fronting the green and knock it close. Pin placements are tough, par is a great score here. [IMG]

    Hole 8: Par 5, 506m, HCP 3
Hole 8 is a very exciting Par 5. Only the bravest of the brave will attempt to go for this in two - it is far more advantageous to knock a wedge in close for better scores. Lay up with a long iron short of the water, and go pin hunting on the uphill approach. [IMG]

    Hole 9: Par 3, 126m, HCP 1
It’s not often a short, downhill Par 3 is the #1 handicap hole on a golf course, but the ninth bucks that trend as all is not it seems. The green looks large and inviting, but with 3 deep bunkers short, a pond eating into the left, and out of bounds at the rear, club selection is absolutely critical. Any wild swings off the tee, and you’re staring at bogey or worse. [IMG]

    Hole 10: Par 4, 445m, HCP 4
This dog leg Par 4 is a real favourite on the course. A stream travels all down the right side of the fairway and needs to be avoided with a draw off the tee. A tricky green awaits you as a deep bunker sits perilously close to the putting surface that slopes from right to left. [IMG]

    Hole 11: Par 4, 436m, HCP 6
The stunning 11th is one of the most photographed holes on the course. Another dog leg left, this time you must carry a series of bunkers in order to have an easier approach to the green. Don’t miss it long or else you’ll be dropping for 4. Don’t miss it left either, the up and down for par will be most difficult. [IMG]

    Hole 12: Par 4, 412m, HCP 8
The 12th is a downhill, dog leg right that demands accuracy from the tee shot if you want a birdie. Avoid the bunkers and roll the ball down as far as you can. The approach is also downhill and needs a soft landing to remain close. Again, don’t miss long. [IMG]

    Hole 13: Par 3, 144m, HCP 10
A tricky Par 3 with a variety of pin placements. Carry the bunkers left and right and try to land the ball with as much backspin as you can, as putting is difficult. Missing the green often results in bogeys. [IMG]

    Hole 14, Par 4, 316m, HCP 12
The 14th is a fantastic risk reward Par 4. Downhill and drivable, it’ll take a lot of guts to carry the hazard to the left. A deep bunker eats into the green at the front and’ll punish the careless player. A real birdie chance if you can make the most of your opportunities. [IMG]

    Hole 15, Par 5, 445m, HCP 18
If you can carry the bunkers off the tee, this is an easy short Par 5. If not, this is still an easy short Par 5. Just make you sure can carry the false front otherwise your ball will roll down some distance off the green.

    Hole 16, Par 4, 313m, HCP 14
16 is another risk reward hole. Downhill all the way, the player must choose to bomb it to the second fairway, or lay up short. Whichever the case, out of bounds is a threat to the right, and the second shot will be hard as the green slopes front to back. [IMG]

    Hole 17, Par 3, 223m, HCP 2
The long 17th hole is a very difficult Par 3. A huge bunker will swallow and ball caught short of the green, and any pins fronting the green will be almost impossible to attack. Birdies are rare here, so aim for the Par and go for it on the closing hole.[IMG]

    Hole 18, Par 5, 441m, HCP 16
This finishing hole is the appropriate ending to this stunning course. Uniquely uphill all the way, the risk taker must bomb their driver over the pond if they want to reach this green in two, as attacking the green with a wood wont allow you to hold the green. This large green offers many pin placements, but is a suitable birdie chance. [IMG]
