So because you definitely didn't ask for it

    DEATH RACE 2022
    The Rise of Trackzilla!

    oooh scary eh?
The mighty Trackzilla has awoken and only the taste of straggling race drivers will appease her appetite
If you don't make the cut you don't make it home - but your sacrifice will help to save some children... somewhere... probably
If you are not fast enough there is no escape from the drooling jaws of Trackzilla!

    Here's the Meat of it
 did he really just say that?

This is an elimination race of 90 70 minutes at Nurburgring. The idea is that at certain times during the race the slowest drivers will be culled from the race reducing the field more and more. By the last segment there will be only 5 drivers left fighting it out for the win. The first segment is 30 mins so everyone at least gets to race that long. In total there are 6 4 segments with 5 3 elimination points. We hope to get at least 30 drivers committing to this race.

As always there's more to digest:

    • Everyone will be in the same type of car - the BMW M4 GT3
    • James Pierre Reaper Read is the Race Dictator Director and will make sure that eliminated drivers are delivered straight into the jaws of Trackzilla
    • JJ_Penguin is the Assistant Race Director and also the YouTube Broadcaster
    • There will be 2 special elimination lap Safety Car periods with a Safety Car actually on track
    • The Safety Car will be driven by James Pierre Read (Cornford)[
    • Qualifying starts now on the Hot-Lap server

    Elimination System:
    • Eliminations occur based on the race order at the end of the lap that the leader is on when the elimination time has been reached (Eg When the clock ticks over to 30:00 mins, the current lap becomes the final lap of the segment).
    • Once every driver has completed the final lap of a segment the Race Director will announce those drivers who are to be eliminated
    • Eliminated drivers must immediately drive off track safely and escape to the pits. The Race Director may DSQ any drivers who take too long to do this or who dispute their eliminated status
    • In the case of the 2 eliminations that have Safety Cars - as each driver completes the final lap of the segment they are immediately subject to the elimination Safety Car lap conditions and must slow down, not pass any other cars and bunch up with the rest of the field behind the Safety Car in race order.
    • The two elimination Safety Car periods occur with the 30min elimination and 60min elimination only. All other eliminations occur under green flag conditions
    • If a driver has a pending penalty just before an elimination the Race Director will use his discretion to factor that in to the running order before determining eliminations.
    • Here is a Google Slides presentation we have created to illustrate the elimination process:
      https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1qKGG75fK0d6eQ-vIvcA5jAfrmQ4dkF7iqjQULs3PHwU/edit?usp=sharing

    Elimination segments:
    >> THIS HAS NOW BEEN CHANGED DUE TO A SMALLER FIELD OF DRIVERS <<

    • 30mins - elimination 1 - anyone outside the top 15 gets eaten - REAL Safety Car for 1 lap
    • 45mins - elimination 2 - anyone outside the top 10 gets eaten - no Safety Car
    • 60mins - elimination 3 - anyone outside the top 5 gets eaten - REAL Safety Car for 1 lap
    • 70mins - finish - the top 3 don't get eaten - no Limo
    Qualifying:
    • The qualifying order will be taken from laptimes set on the Hot-Lap server prior to race day
    • The Hot-Lap server will be available for the rest of this week (until midnight Sunday 13th) so get as many laps in as you like. !!! Deadline extended to 6pm Monday !!!
    • Each driver's single best lap on the Hot-Lap server will be used as their qualifying time
    • The race server entry list will be compiled from all drivers who set a lap on the Hot-Lap server this week
    • Only times in the correct car will count towards a driver's qualifying
    • The final qualifying order will be filtered into the three classes with PRO class starting at the back of the grid and AM class starting at the front, leaving SILVER in the middle. Each class will still be in order from fastest to slowest (this is not a reverse grid)

How is this not a reverse grid? All the PRO drivers will be at the back of the start grid, right?

Yes but only the class itself is put to the back. The fastest PRO driver will be in front of all the other Pro drivers. Same for the other classes.

After Wednesday practice we can definitely say the pro's are going to have a interesting time from the back of the grid!

Hey All. Don't forget to get some qualifying laps in on the Hot-lap server before midnight Sunday! (Wednesday night's Wacky Wednesday laps DO NOT COUNT!)

This is the OFFICIAL QUALIFYING for Monday night's Death Race.

We will also be creating the ENTRY LIST from this so if you want to join the Race you need to qualify BEFORE MONDAY!

Question about the pitstop being mandatory. Does that only apply to the eventual winner, or the people that make it into the last split? If someone is eliminated after 30 mins without having done a stop, then so what? If people who think they are likely to get eliminated at the first cull do a mandatory stop in the first 30 mins, then they're more likely to get eliminated than someone who can leave their stop later.

That's a good question. Short answer - Yes the mandatory stop will only ultimately apply to those who make it to the end. If you get eaten you don't need to have done your stop :)

If a driver feels they are in danger of getting culled in the first elimination then they should NOT do a pitstop. If you get culled it's of no consequence missing the mandatory stop. In fact we'll nullify any penalty for that for those who get culled - just for the final race order (other penalties won't get nullified). We contemplated doing a short pit window mid-race (after a couple of eliminations have occurred) but decided to leave it open to see if someone wanted to risk an early stop or push long on old tyres and low fuel :).

We have no idea how this race will play out as it's an experiment - but hopefully a fun one!

BTW everyone - don't forget to go qualify on the Hotlap server today!

So far not enough brave drivers have qualified for the Death Race so we are going to extend the qualifying deadline to 6pm AEDT tomorrow (Monday). Fingers crossed we get a flurry of late entries :thumbsup:

OK due to a slightly smaller grid than hoped (20 drivers) we are making some adjustments to the race length and eliminations:

    Elimination segments:
    • 30mins - elimination 1 - anyone outside the top 15 gets eaten - REAL Safety Car for 1 lap
    • 45mins - elimination 2 - anyone outside the top 10 gets eaten - no Safety Car
    • 60mins - elimination 3 - anyone outside the top 5 gets eaten - REAL Safety Car for 1 lap
    • 70mins - finish - the top 3 don't get eaten - no Limo
There is still a compulsory pitstop for fuel even though the M4 GT3 may make 70 mins on a full tank (not tested this). This means even if you can finish the race on fuel you will still need to pit and take at least 1 litre of fuel. There are still strategy possibilities as some may take tyres and some may not.

Really enjoyed the event. Messed up my part by starting with 10l of fuel necessitating a 30s pit stop on lap 2. Also still think I was 15th after the first 30minutes. However any disappointment was made up by seeing frosty throwing it all away on the last corner, easily surpassing my stuff-up. :p
