At least even the elite golfers can struggle on some holes here :D. Whilst I found this tournament extremely hard and didn’t feel I played that badly except for a couple of less than perfect shots, which is enough to spell disaster here. It was a great challenge. The upside is after going through all that and finishing at 31 over, I found going back to PGA tour events. even with wind high and conditions hard it was a breeze. Lol. This tournament will make us all better for the run. Looking forward to the next one.

    Ditto.
The first 2 rounds was hole 7 or 8.
The 3rd round I managed to not hit the stroke limit, but had a really high score on the last hole...
The 4th round I hit the stroke limit on a hole I've done well on before...

Stroke limit aside, I would have been close to par..
Gotta to remember to play while alert..

That’s the idea, I accept that this tournament was in hindsight a tad too hard, largely due to the wind from Round 2 onwards and speed of the greens, it turned some fairways into a crapshoot.
But by getting a handle of these settings, I’ll argue most players wont find themselves in a situation they can’t handle in the vanilla game again.

(again, apologies for a lack of photos thanks to :):):):)ty imgur)

    Sattler Heads - Black

    Hole 1: Par 4, 350m HCP: 10
The drive at #1 should be long and on the left side, which should leave you just a wedge onto the green. The putting surface slopes in all directions, but each pin is accessible from most areas of the green.

    Hole 2: Par 3, 230m HCP: 4
The challenge ramps up at #2 with a very long Par 3. You cannot run the ball up to the green conventionally as a cluster of bunkers protect the front of the green that slopes severely toward the water on the right. Use the left side of the green to set yourself up for a 2 putt par. A birdie is extremely rare here.

    Hole 3: Par 4, 487m HCP: 2
If the 2nd wasn’t long enough for you, then 3rd hole will be an even tougher challenge. A drive along the right side will make the hole shorter, but the bunkers will eat up any errant shot. Too far left will leave a long fairway wood into a green where 3 small bunkers bring themselves into play. A bail out area to the right is available for a safe pitch and putt.

    Hole 4: Par 3, 184m HCP: 8
Another long Par 3, this huge green is 4 clubs deep and protected by no less than 9 bunkers. The green slopes from back to front. Use the wind to your advantage if possible.

    Hole 5: Par 5, 536m HCP: 14
The first of five Par 5’s, you’ll want to keep your drive as far left as possible. A drive of at least 300m is required to reach this green in two. Bunkers will swallow your ball on the left if you hook it off the tee. Two deep bunkers punish those with more ambition over adhesion. A difficult green too, it slopes like an upside down fruit bowl. A very underrated hole.

    Hole 6: Par 3, 157m HCP: 6
The 6th hole offers a stunning view of the Tasman Sea. Aim for the right side of the bunkers, your tee shot should clear them regardless of pin placement. Use the contours of the green to guide your ball towards the pin. A tricky but manageable Par 3 with a deep green, with the true threat coming from going long.

    Hole 7: Par 4, 281m HCP: 16
A brilliant risk-reward, uphill short Par 4. Go for the green, at worse you’ll have a short pitch onto a small but lightly slowing green. The bunkers are small and don’t really come into play. But if the wind is blowing hard, the wide fairway before the green is a safe out.

    Hole 8: Par 5, 498m HCP: 18
Ranked the easiest hole on the course, but don’t be fooled. Trouble lurks to punish the overconfident player. A split fairway reward those who aim left with a long iron approach shot with no bunkers to carry. An approach from the right will need a hybrid to carry a bunker front right into a green that slopes towards the back. Out of bounds behind the green punishes any shot that goes long. A great birdie opportunity.

    Hole 9: Par 5, 584m HCP: 12
The longest hole on the course, this downhill Par 5 is still reachable in two with 2 very good shots. A 300m drive leaves a ballsy 3 wood shot with an inlet ready to swallow any pushes out to the right. An eagle here will leave your opponents trembling with fear!

    Hole 10: Par 3, 182m HCP: 7
A deep but shallow green is the setting for this Par 3. Bunkers protect this green front and right while the green slopes severely to the left. Let the ball run up toward the flag for the safest play.

    Hole 11: Par 4, 418m HCP: 5
The 11th provides the most picturesque setting of all the holes at Sattler Heads. Then it’s decision time. Can you carry the split fairway? If you cannot, a 3 wood off the tee to the left leaves another wood into a small green along the water. A blasted drive will leave a much easier approach shot. The green slopes toward the water on the right which makes putting treacherous.

    Hole 12: Par 5, 515m HCP: 13
This quaint little Par 5 is a real beauty. But if you mis-hit your tee shot, it’s a real beast. Accuracy is key, and tight for an aggressive line off the tee. A fairway wood off a sharply sloped fairway needs to be accurate to avoid the strategically placed bunker on the right. Pins on the right of the green are much more difficult than on the left.

    Hole 13: Par 4, 375m HCP: 9
Another hole that asks questions off the tee. A huge drive to the upper tier rewards the player with an easy wedge to the green. A safer tee shot will leave a blind uphill short iron into the green that slopes severely back the player. A tough birdie on any day.

    Hole 14: Par 4, 463m HCP: 1
The most fun hole on the course. Blast your drive down the narrow fairway to leave a short iron into a narrow green that slopes toward the drop off. Apply some spin to keep the ball from rolling off into the rough. A birdie is the reward for the brave player.

    Hole 15: Par 3, 108m HCP: 11
The shortest and easiest Par 3 on the course. Lob a short iron or pitching wedge onto a huge green with generous pin placements. The bunkers short will make this hole a whole lot more difficult however. The game will try to default you to a pitch shot off the tee, make sure you change it to a normal shot for a much better attack at the pin.

    Hole 16: Par 4, 283m HCP: 15
Another short Par 4 that presents itself with a number of alternatives. The brave but probably stupid player can go for the green with a driver over the bunkers, but must face a tricky chip shot if the ball doesn’t bounce favourably. The safer play is shoot a 3 wood out right for a wedge shot into an expansive green. Go for the long putt, sink it, and charge to the last 2 holes.

    Hole 17: Par 5, 551m HCP: 17
A downhill Par 5 that gives the player a chance to blast their tee shot to an expansive fairway. A huge green invites the player to go for the green with a hybrid or long iron. Don’t blow the birdie opportunity on this hole!

    Hole 18: Par 4, 506m HCP: 3
A very long and difficult Par 4 to end your round. A drive of 300m still requires a long iron or
fairway wood to a 2 tiered green that is protected by bunkers front and right. This hole is significantly easier when the pins are at the front of the green. A great finish to your day.

    Dec 30 - Jan 5
    Course: Makiwi CC
Difficulty: 2/10 - A course friendly for golfers of all levels.
    Par: 71
    Rounds: 4
A beautiful course located in Cape Saunders, South Island, Makiwi CC is a fantasy public course that offers a relaxing round of golf for players who want a break from the brutal difficulty of more recent tournaments. Some long Par 5’s and treacherous cliffs offer tests to those who are brave, but most holes offer birdies with little resistance.

    Hole 1: Par 4, 486m
Blast your tee shot on this long downhill Par 4 at least 270m to leave a long iron or fairway wood into a large green protected by bunkers front and right. You don’t want to miss this green to the left as the slope makes for a difficult return pitch shot. The green slopes severely to the ocean.

    Hole 2: Par 3, 170m
The picturesque 2nd hole demands an accurate tee shot into a 2 tiered green that is 30m deep. Small pot bunkers defend any errant shot missing right and left. Hook the ball of the tee and it’ll sink to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

    Hole 3: Par 4, 331m
An exciting Par 4 that allows the player to set up a short wedge approach if they can thread the needle with driver off the tee. A fairway wood still leaves a short iron into a narrow green that slopes away from you. The dried up barranca isn’t considered a hazard so you’ll need to play your ball out of the weeds if it finishes there.

    Hole 4: Par 4, 414m
The 4th gives the player another opportunity to blast his tee shot into an inviting fairway along the inlet. A bunker 280m from the tee will swallow any tee shot that is too far to the right. Even a conservative tee shot will leave a simple approach to a green that is mostly flat with a subtle break toward the sea.

    Hole 5: Par 5, 505m
The course goes inland on this medium length Par 5, with water all along the left side. Small bunkers approximately 260m from tee will catch shots sprayed out right. The 2nd shot is all uphill but a large green entices the player to go bold for an eagle chance. Otherwise a lay up will leave an easy approach shot into a green that slopes from back to front.

    Hole 6: Par 4, 299m
A spectacular short Par 4 that presents the bold player to go for the green from the tee. Bunkers protect the green front and left while the green slopes severely away from the player on all sides. Grab the birdie and charge towards the 7th.

    Hole 7: Par 5, 590m
A very long dogleg right Par 5 that requires 2 very good shots to reach this green in under regulation. Otherwise this is a fairly simple hole with not much trouble unless you miss the green long or to the right. Watch your lie angle, your fairway shots will all want to shoot right due to the slope. Use the bushy tree behind the green as a guide for your approach.

    Hole 8: Par 3, 153m
Another narrow and deep Par 3, this 2 tiered green slopes in all directions which makes pin hunting tricky. Check the wind before you tee off, make sure you have the right club in your hands. Don’t underestimate this hole.

    Hole 9: Par 4, 396m
A dogleg right Par 4 which slopes severely to the right. This hole rewards the longer hitters that can hit over the tree off the tee, in order to have a wedge into this bean shaped green. Pins located at the front are difficult to attack due to the heavy slope. Get your yardage right for the approach, you don’t want to have a long putt on this green.

    Hole 10: Par 4, 435m
The inward 9 at Makiwi CC begins with a downhill Par 4 just as the front 9 does. Again, the fairway slopes off the toward the ocean so watch your aim. This isolated green looks innocent, but any mi:):):):)s will end up in the water below.

    Hole 11: Par 3, 127m
A pitching wedge into this beautiful Par 3 is the play at number 11. Avoid the bunker protecting the green at the front and you should be able to walk off with an easy par.

    Hole 12: Par 4, 366m
Going back inland once again, a tee shot needs to be long and left to avoid the treacherous drop off to the right. A tiny bunker is the green’s only defence from a wedge shot being fired at the pin. A terrific birdie opportunity.

    Hole 13: Par 5, 561m
The last Par 5 is a downhill 3 shotter. Blast the tee shot down the narrow fairway to open up the green that is surrounded by water. 2 bail out areas leave a short wedge approach into a huge green with slopes everywhere. An easy to 3 putt green, par is a good score on any day.

    Hole 14: Par 4, 252m
A short exciting Par 4 with more trouble than you can poke a stick at. Bunkers protect this green from the front while water will rack up strokes quicker than you realise. It’s difficult to hold the green with a driver so going for it off the tee may not be the best play.

    Hole 15: Par 4, 333m
Another short Par 4, this one is uphill all the way with bunkers everywhere to stop players trying to blast their tee shot past them. Place your tee shot short of them, you’ll still have a wedge onto this huge green that slopes back toward you.

    Hole 16: Par 3, 175m
A mid iron off the tee into another giant green should leave a comfortable 2 putt par. Deep bunkers right will punish any errant shot.

    Hole 17: Par 4, 410m
An accurate tee shot needs to be placed down the left side of the fairway on this medium length Par 4.
Some tight pins may require some shot shaping with a short iron to be accessible. Make sure you don’t leave your approach short or to the right.

    Hole 18: Par 4, 475m
This long finishing hole demands a blasted tee shot to leave a mid iron into a very inviting green. 2 small bunkers protect this green but don’t pose much of a threat. A birdie to finish up is icing on the cake.

Well that was a little frustrating I stood on first tee 31 under for last round, i pulled drive left on first hole, deep rough, never managed to get it back to fairway and take an 11 ! Stands on 2nd tee 24 under. I did manage to have 9 birdies after that to salvage a final score of 33 under. Poo !!
