Yahoo, what a race! I was lucky to make the race after a spot of late afternoon karting, and just made it in time. Cheers for waiting for me.
After a few laps practice I was surprised that Keeden & I were very closely matched on pace. I had hope but once again I thought I would just be settling for 2nd again. Then
@MINT_GTR shot me a message asking if there was room... Oh crap!
First few laps were not good, and Hat/Viper were stealing my slipstream. In a last gasp effort I held back and waited for a car to follow, and managed to position myself perfectly behind Tubby. The lap was nailed, a full lap of slipstream produced a lap time I didn’t think was possible!
A great start and first lap allowed me to pull away to form a critical gap, and I thus was able so maintain pace whilst saving fuel. Mint got past Keeden and began homing in on me, but I knew as soon as he pitted on lap 13 he was out of contention.
Keeden wasn’t gaining on me too much after the pit stop but the pressure started to mount as the laps ticked down. 4 seconds became 3, 3 became 4 again, then 4 became 2, then 1... I had to stop thinking of the win and get back to focusing on my braking points. Ultimately he didn’t get within attacking range but it was seriously intense, if I had an off it was over.
A huge relief to get my first Div 1 win since February 2016 which was a race very similar to this one. Looking forward to the wet finale!
